Entertainment on Nontraditional Devices

The following entertainment article was written exclusively for Spreety TV Online by professional journalist Carolyn Giardina.

Accessing and Viewing Entertainment Content on Nontraditional Devices

By Carolyn Giardina

The interest in accessing and viewing entertainment content on nontraditional devices was growing this year at Electronic Entertainment Expo, the annual computer and video games convention better known as E3, which occurred in June at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

An estimated 41,000 attendees previewed upcoming titles such as James Cameron’s 3D “Avatar,” “The Beatles: Rock Band” and a new version of Wii Fit. More than 40 million subscribers use the entertainment networks of Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network, said Michael Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, which puts on E3.

Gallagher also reported that during the first three months that Netflix was available through Xbox Live, over 25 million hours of movies and TV programming was viewed.

And now content availability it poised to grow. Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed that its PSP portable system would offer direct access to PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, where users can download movies and television programs to the mobile device.

Also at E3, Sony’s video delivery service announced content from 16 new partners in Hollywood, anime and sports. With these partners, Sony expects its service to offer nearly 1,900 movies and 9,400 TV episodes.

Hollywood content partners include Showtime Networks, Starz Media, Summit Entertainment, The Weinstein Company, HDnet and Magnolia Pictures. Among the sports partners are HDNet Fights, UFC, Wrestling from TNA and Video Action Sports.

PlayStation Store will feature TV shows such as Showtime’s “Dexter” and E!’s “The Soup.” A new anime channel will be added to the lineup.

Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed that Xbox would deliver 1080p movies and TV with 5.1 surround sound, instantly on demand and direct to consoles connected to compatible HD TVs through the Xbox LIVE social entertainment network.

Spreety Upgrades (6/18)

Growth is a nice problem to solve, and Spreety TV Online is growing quickly.

To keep pace with demand, starting midnight (ET) on Thursday, June 18, Spreety will commence a complex series of upgrades. The result will be improved speed and capacity.

While the intent is zero downtime, the complexity may lead to something unexpected.

With the upgrade, there will be a few changes:

  1. Decades will be renamed to Classic TV.
  2. The “Surprise Me” feature will be retired. This will allow a 25% improvement in speed.
  3. The Bubbles Game will still exist, but will be more difficult to find (use this link). Our decision to deprecate is due to the excessive ads recently appearing with that game.

For the tech lovers, parallel environments will run while the Spreety domain name changes IP address. The entire process may take a few days to update across the Internet.

Wish us luck.

Mobile Digital Television Is the Future

The following entertainment article was written exclusively for Spreety TV Online by professional journalist Carolyn Giardina.

Mobile Digital Television Is the Future
By Carolyn Giardina

The radio and TV industries are planning for the future, and National Association of Broadcasters president/CEO David Rehr recently outlined what that means for viewers.

“This mobile DTV revolution has already begun,” Rehr reported. “Mobile digital television will launch across 66 stations and 27 markets–covering 38 percent of U.S. television households–and more will follow.

“Television broadcasters are moving TV beyond the bedroom, living room or kitchen. That means watching ‘Lost’ on your handheld media player or ’Heroes’ on your cell phone. That means anywhere you are, you can access the news or your favorite shows. That’s our future.”

In moving in this direction, NAB provided the seed money to support the Open Mobile Video Coalition—more than 800 television stations working to bring digital television to mobile and handheld devices.

Rehr also suggested that computer manufacturers produce upwards of 40 million digital TV screens each year, adding: “We, of course, currently know them as laptop computers. … Our Fastroad program is working with manufacturers and their sub-system suppliers on how to incorporate DTV reception in laptop computers–both the chip and the antenna–so receiving digital television will be easier than connecting to Wi-Fi.”

In the area of radio, Rehr reported: “We’ve been reaching out to U.S. mobile phone carriers to include FM chips in cell phones. This brings radio to upwards of 250 million devices in consumers’ hands.”

He reported that Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile are offering FM radio-capable handset devices. “And we’re working to get Apple on board as well,” he said.

Rehr noted that integrated FM receivers would give cell phone users access to the Emergency Alert System. “These announcements are relied upon as a lifeline for Americans during emergencies, and we’re getting a great response,” he added.

Editor’s Note: Since delivering the above report, David Rehr has announced his intent to leave the NAB and the position he held since December 2005. The NAB has formed a search committee to find a replacement.

NASA TV: Space Shuttle – Hubble Live

The Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off on May 11 for an eleven day mission to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope.

To watch it live, click here. STS 125

The Hubble Space Telescope will be captured by space shuttle’s robotic arm. The Shuttle will then move the Hubble into a special cradle, called the Flight Support System, or FSS, in Atlantis’ payload bay. The telescope will be latched for the duration of the servicing work. An umbilical adjacent to the rotating FSS will be remotely connected to provide electrical power from Atlantis to the telescope. Then, the shuttle will be positioned to allow Hubble’s solar arrays to gather energy from the sun to fully charge the telescope’s batteries.

Ultradome: Vader vs. Gandalf

Ultradome: Darth Vader vs. Gandalf
By Carolyn Giardina

Have you ever asked yourself if Harry Potter could beat Neo in a fight?

If questions such as this have crossed your mind, then you’ll be interested to hear about “Ultradome”—a new comedic web series of shorts that address comic book/video game/fantasy/sci-fi pop culture.

Ultradome “Heroes” actor Milo Ventimiglia will produce the series through his DiVide Pictures and partner Agility Studios.

Plans call for each episode to begin with two characters engaged in a pop culture debate. The characters then find themselves in the Ultradome—a packed stadium where the two engage in single combat, using weaponry, gear and skills from the pop culture touchstones referenced in the argument.

The series will therefore begin with weapons such as light sabres and swords. Ventimiglia produced and stars in the pilot episode, “Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings,” and will direct select future episodes. He co-created the show’s format with partner Russ Cundiff and Agility executives Keith Quinn and Zev Suissa.

“My whole life has been spent engaged with friends in intellectual debate … like whether Kirk is tougher than Spock or if Middle Earth is a more difficult place to live than Tatooine. With Ultradome, we can bring these debates to the public and settle them in the most logical way possible: through armed combat,” Ventimiglia says. “We’re very excited to be working with Agility on this series and to tap into their expertise in digital programming.”

The producers expect to include cameos from sci-fi enthusiast actors, writers and directors in the series.

“Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings,” is currently in postproduction. The pilot was written by Mike Alber and Gabriel Snyder, and directed by Nathan Matsuda.

The timing for this project appears to be ideal, as Comic-Con International — the annual event for comic book and related pop culture — is slated for July 23-26 in San Diego.

Previews may become available at the Agility Studios site under Portfolio, Ultradome.
